The Champagnat Catholic Lions take on the Victory Christian Academy Storm in the FHSAA Class 2A state championship contest on Thursday night at Gene Cox Stadium in Tallahassee.
Champagnat Catholic(9-3) is making their fourth consecutive state championship game appearance and last won the championship in 2017. They fell in the title game last year to North Florida Christian 23-20. The Lions hosted three playoff games as they defeated Miami Christian 35-7 in the second round, blanked Moore Haven 42-0 in the regional final and topped Seffner Christian 30-21 in the state semifinal. Running back Calvin Montgomery and Donovan Jones will get their rushing opportunities from the backfield. Quarterback Ryle Aguila can connect passes to wide receivers Johnquai Lewis, Malik Rutherford, Cur'mari Dopson, Shayon Walton and James Herard.
Victory Christian Academy(11-1), who last won the Class 2A state title in 2014, played all their postseason games at home. They beat Orangewood Christian 33-7, shut out Foundation Academy 35-0 in a regional final and got by University Christian 20-7 in a state semifinal. The Storm have outscored their opponents 329-112 this season. Their only loss this year was to Trinity Catholic by three points. The Storm will depend on their rushing attack with running backs Cornelius Shaw and Kiaun Lockett. The main targets of quarterback Jeremiah Byrd on passing attempts are wide receivers Preston Smith and Keyshawn Covington.
