The Miami Northwestern Bulls held off the Jones Tigers 34-17 in the FHSAA Class 5A state championship game at Daytona Stadium in Daytona Beach on Saturday. The Bulls captured their third consecutive state title and seventh overall. They won the Class 6A state championship in 2017 and 2018.
Jones(13-2) scored on their opening possession at 7:19 of the first quarter for a 7-0 lead. Running back Avarius Sparrow pounded in from two yards away.
Miami Northwestern(13-2) recovered a fumble during a punt return at the Tigers 15-yard line. Four plays later, running back Nathaniel Noel dashed in from six yards out to tie the game 7-7 at the 4:05 mark.
The Bulls took their first lead 14-7 just 13 seconds into the second quarter. Quarterback Taron Dickens connected a 17-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Marcus Fleming.
The Tigers answered back and evened it up 14-14 on their next drive. Sparrow got the ball and scored on a six-yard touchdown run with 7:15 left in the first half.
In the third quarter, Miami Northwestern took a 21-14 lead on their first possession at 6:57. Noel sprinted for a touchdown from eight yards away.
Jones responded on their next drive and cut the gap to 21-17 with 1:46 to go in the third. Jeffrey Saint-Louis was able to kick a 27-yard field goal.
It became a ten-point margin for the Bulls at 8:24 of the fourth quarter. Noel compiled his third touchdown of the contest as he busted in on a one-yard run.
After the Tigers lost the ball on downs at their 40-yard line, Miami Northwestern expanded their lead to 34-17 with 3:59 left in the fourth. Wide receiver Romello Brinson caught a seven-yard touchdown pass from Dickens on the right side of the end zone.
