The Florida Panthers were stopped by the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1 on Tuesday night at BB&T Center. The Lightning have won three of their last five games and now trail the Cats by two points in the Atlantic Division standings.
In the first period, Tampa Bay(15-11-3) went up 1-0 at the 6:42 mark. Alex Killorn knocked the puck away from Josh Brown in the low left circle. Steven Stamkos carried the puck through the crease, delayed a shot and finally put a forehand shot past Sergei Bobrovsky for his 11th goal of the season. It was his fourth goal in the last three contests.
The Lightning made it 2-0 at 4:51 of the second period. Killorn passed the puck from the right circle to Anthony Cirelli in the slot area. His close-range shot was saved, however Killorn put in a wrist shot from the right of the crease for his ninth goal of the campaign.
Florida(15-10-5) thought they broke the shutout with 8:51 left in the third period. Vincent Trocheck won a faceoff in the left circle and drew the puck back to MacKenzie Weegar on the left point. His slap shot was deflected in with a high stick by Brett Connolly in the crease area.
The Panthers pulled the goalie from their net for an extra attacker with three minutes to go. It worked as Evgenii Dadonov poked in a rebound from the blue paint following a Mike Hoffman wrist shot from the right circle and a redirection by Jonathan Huberdeau.
