Panthers Freeze Sabres

The Florida Panthers began a three-game road trip with a 4-1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres at KeyBank Center on Monday. The Panthers leaped over the Sabres in the Eastern Conference standings. It was a rare weekday afternoon contest because of Martin Luther King Day.
In the first period, Florida(21-20-4) got out to a 1-0 lead at the 4:01 mark. Matthew Tkachuk tried to stuff the puck from the right of the crease and former Sabres player Brandon Montour pushed it in from the blue paint past Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen for his eighth goal of the season. Tkachuk was able to extend his point streak to a team-high seven games this season.
The Panthers extended it to 2-0 at 8:04 of the second period. Carter Verhaeghe backhanded a shot that went off Tkachuk in the crease. It bounced back out and Sam Bennett one-timed a forehand shot from the inner right circle for his 10th goal of the campaign.
It became 3-0 for Florida 34 seconds into the third period. Aleksander Barkov kicked the puck ahead in his own zone. Sam Reinhart came into the Buffalo(21-9-2) zone on a 2-on-1 breakaway. He slid the puck over from the left circle and Anton Lundell powered in a one-time slap shot from the low right circle for his fifth tally of the season. It was Lundell's first goal in 14 contests.
The Sabres broke the shutout with 8:33 left in the third. Alex Tuch dropped the puck in front of him and placed in his 21st goal of this season with a wrist shot from the right wing.
Buffalo pulled their goalie for an extra attacker with 1:50 left in the period. It did not work as Verhaeghe shot the puck from the Panthers blue line into an empty net with 1:38 remaining in the period for a Florida 4-1 lead. Tkachuk picked up his third assist of the game while Gustav Forsling was credited with the secondary assist.
