The New York Mets avoided a three-game sweep with a 5-2 win over the Miami Marlins at Marlins Park on Sunday. The Marlins dropped below the Mets for last place in the National League East.
The Mets scored in the second to go up 1-0. Kevin Plawecki doubled to center field for Todd Frazier to score. Asdrubal Cabrera homered to right field on a 3-1 pitch in the third inning.
New York(33-48) expanded their margin to three runs in the top of the fourth and never looked back. Steven Matz knocked in Frazier with a base hit into center field.
Miami(34-51) placed their first run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Miguel Rojas scored on a fielding error by Matz during a Dan Straily at-bat.
The Mets pulled away with two runs during the eighth. Frazier drove in Cabrera on a double to deep center. A pickup attempt at third by J.T. Realmuto went off the right arm of Frazier, bounced into left field and Frazier crossed the plate.
The Marlins put up a tally in the bottom of the frame. Cameron Maybin pounded a solo home run to center field on a 2-1 count.
