The Miami Marlins fell to the Tampa Bay Rays 9-6 in 16 innings on Tuesday night at Marlins Park. The final game of the Citrus Series is on Wednesday.
Tampa Bay(43-42) bolstered four runs in the first two innings. Wilson Ramos nailed a two-run homer in the first inning to center field on the first pitch for his 12th home run of the year.
In the second, the Rays made it a three-run margin as Adeiny Hechavarria knocked in Daniel Robertston with a double into left field. Mallex Smith followed with a base hit to shallow center to score Hechavarria.
Miami(35-52) cut into the deficit during the bottom of the second. Trevor Richards came to the plate with the bases loaded and singled up the middle for Justin Bour and J.T. Riddle to score.
The Marlins eventually tied the contest in the fifth inning. Brian Anderson singled to right field which brought in J.B. Schuck. J.T. Realmuto later hit a sacrifice fly to right and Starlin Castro scored.
Neither club would score again until the 16th inning. Jake Bauers drove in Kevin Kiermaier and Matt Duffy with a double to deep right field. Two batters later, Vidal Nuno placed a single into right and Bauers crossed the plate to make it 7-4. Robertson found the gap in right-center field for a double which scored Ramos and pinch-runner Nathan Eovaldi.
The Fish went down with a fight in the bottom of the frame as they loaded the bases with none out. Bryan Holaday skyed a sacrifice fly to the wall in left-center field for Lewis Brinson to score. Realmuto grounded into a fielder's choice to third which got Dietrich home.
