Both schools were tied 14-14 at the end of the first quarter. Miami(6-5, 2-5) got ahead midway through the second quarter. Louisville(10-1, 7-1) scored a touchdown and missed an extra point in the final seconds of the first half and trailed 21-20.
There were two lead changes during the third quarter with the Canes ahead 28-23 at the end of the frame. The Cardinals took the lead 31-28 before the Hurricanes responded and got a 51-yard field goal by Andres Borregales for a 31-31 tie with 5:39 to go in the fourth quarter. The Cards pulled away 38-31 when Jack Plummer threw a 58-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Coleman with 4:17 left in the fourth.
