The Miami Marlins lost their third straight game to the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday at Busch Stadium. This time they fell 3-2 and were swept in Missouri for the first time since May 2000. The Fish are now 14-31 on the road this season.
In the bottom of the first, St. Louis(53-34) jumped out to the early lead against Marlins starting pitcher Jose Fernandez. Three batters in, Matt Holliday pounded a two-out solo home run to center field on a 1-1 pitch for his 12th homer this year.
Miami(32-55) responded fast in the top of the second to tie the game against Redbirds starter Lance Lynn. After Marcell Ozuna flied out to center, Derek Dietrich doubled into deep center field. He would score on a base hit by Adeiny Hechavarria to right field.
The Cards regained the lead with two runs in the third inning. Matt Carpenter was hit by a pitch and Carlos Beltran got to first on a bunt single. After Holliday walked to load the bases, Carpenter crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly to right field by Allen Craig. When David Freese struck out, Beltran stole home on the back end of a double steal.
The Marlins closed the margin in the fourth inning to make it 3-2. Ozuna smacked a one-out triple to deep center field. Three batters later, Mathis drove in Ozuna on a bunt single in the infield with two out.
Fernandez, who was selected to the National League All-Star team on Saturday, dropped to 5-5 this season as he allowed three runs on four hits in six innings and struck out five. Lynn improved to 11-3 as he gave up two runs on seven hits and struck out seven in seven innings pitched. Former Marlin Edward Mujica got his 23th save for the Cards as he pitched a perfect ninth inning.
