The Marlins returned to Miami and began a ten-game homestand with a 2-0 shutout over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night at Marlins Park. The Fish, who are now 15-7 at home since May 31, picked up their third shutout of the season.
Henderson Alvarez picked up his first win as a Marlin since he was acquired by the team during the off-season from Toronto. He allowed no runs on two hits in six innings and upped his record to 1-1. Pittsburgh(60-41) starting pitcher Jeff Locke dropped to 9-3 as he gave up two runs on eight hits and struck out a career-high nine batters in 6 2/3 innings. Steve Cishek piled up his fourth save this week and his 21st save this year.
Miami(39-62) broke the scoreless tie during the sixth inning. After Logan Morrison grounded out to first, Donovan Solano walked. Jake Marisnick got his first major league base hit with a single into center field and Jeff Mathis followed with a walk to load the bases for the Fish. Placido Polanco came in to pinch-hit by Alvarez and squeaked an infield single to the left side for Solano to score.
Giancarlo Stanton connected with a lead-off solo home run in the bottom of the seventh on a 3-1 pitch to left field for his 12th homer this season.
