The Miami Marlins fell short for the second straight game in Pittsburgh as they lost to the Pirates 4-2 on Wednesday night at PNC Park. The Fish gave up a walk-off pinch-hit home run by Josh Harrison in the ninth inning the previous night in The Steel City.
Miami(43-69), who now are 17-37 on the road, got their only runs in the game during the top of the fourth against Charlie Morton. Giancarlo Stanton started with a base hit into center and advanced to third on a double by Logan Morrison to right-center field. Donovan Solano followed with single that landed in shallow center to score Stanton for a 1-0 lead. Adeiny Hechavarria grounded into a double play for Morrison to cross the plate.
Andrew McCutchen narrowed the margin in the bottom of the frame for Pittsburgh(69-44) as he smacked his 16th home run of the season to center field with one out on a 3-1 pitch by Tom Koehler.
The Pirates eventually took the lead in the fifth inning. They had Josh Harrison on third and Jordy Mercer on second when Morton stroked a single into right field to bring in Harrison. With Starling Marte at-bat, Mercer came home on a wild pitch.
The Bucs extended their lead in the eighth inning against A.J. Ramos. Neil Walker lead off with double to right and went to third on an infield hit by McCutchen. Pedro Alvarez drove in Walker on a sacrifice fly to center field.
Koehler dropped to 3-7 as he surrendered three runs on four hits and struck out eight in five innings pitched. Morton allowed two runs on six hits in seven innings as he improved to 4-3.
