It was battle between two Italy club rivals from the Serie A League as Inter Milan beat Juventus 1-1 on ten rounds of penalty kicks(9-8) in the seventh-place game of the International Champions Cup at Sun Life Stadium on Tuesday night. Both teams, who both lost in the first two rounds of the tournament, meet two times a year during the Serie A regular season.
Inter Milan, who goes by its original name FC Internazionale, have won three UEFA European Cup championships, 18 Serie A titles and seven Italian Cup titles. Juventus F.C., a.k.a. Juve, have won a league-record 31 Serie A titles, two UEFA European Cup championships and nine Italian Cup titles.
Inter Milan, who has won three UEFA European Cup championships and 18 Serie A titles, scored first in the 28th minute. They counterattacked down the field as midfielder Fredy Guarin ripped a right-footed shot from 26 yards away that was saved by goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon. Midfielder Ricardo Alvarez put in the rebound from 10 yards out with the left foot to give Inter Milan a 1-0 lead.
Juventus was able to even the match in 45th minute on a penalty kick. Forward Mirko Vucinic was tripped up by defender Juan Jesus as tried to take a turnaround shot from 14 yards out and Juventus was awarded a penalty kick. Midfielder Arturo Vidal converted it past goalkeeper Samir Handanovic to tie it at 1-1.
In the second half, Juve midfielder Andrea Pirlo hit a direct kick from 28 yards away that caromed off the left post in the 77th minute. The game was tied after 90 minutes and went to penalty kicks.
After both squads missed their first penalty kicks, they both scored in the next eight rounds. Inter Milan goalkeeper Juan Pablo Carrizo made a two-handed save against midfielder Mauricio Isla in the tenth round. Carrizo would score the game-winning shot against Juventus goalkeeper Marco Storari as he rocketed the ball up the middle to the top end of the net.
