Jose Fernandez posted a career-high 14 strikeouts in one game as the Miami Marlins pounded the Cleveland Indians with a 10-0 shutout on Friday night at Marlins Park. He had a career-high 13 strikeouts in his previous start against the Pittsburgh Pirates just five days ago. The last time someone had at least 13 strikeouts in consecutive starts was Randy Johnson in 2004 with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The last rookie to accomplish this feat was Kerry Wood of the Chicago Cubs in 1998.
Fernandez improved his record to 8-5 in his rookie year as he allowed no runs and just three hits in eight innings. Cleveland(60-49) starting pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez gave up five runs on nine hits in four innings as he fell to 8-6.
Miami(43-65) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. With Ed Lucas on third along with Giancarlo Stanton on second and one out, Logan Morrison got an RBI-double to left field as Lucas scored. Stanton would score on a ground out to second by Donovan Solano. Adeiny Hechavarria followed with a base hit into right field to bring in Morrison.
In the second inning, Morrison knocked in Christian Yelich on a two-out single to center field. Jake Marisnick led off the third inning with a double to right field and scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly to right by Fernandez to make it 5-0.
The Marlins poured it on as they added another five runs in the eighth inning against Indians reliever Matt Albers when he surrendered seven hits. Cleveland was held to three hits in the game as they were shut out.
