The Washington Nationals only needed a couple of runs in the first inning to defeat the Miami Marlins 2-1 at Nationals Park on Tuesday. It was the first game of a nine-game road trip for the Marlins. The Fish, who were held to four hits, have lost six of their last seven games.
In the first inning, Washington(66-65) picked up two runs off Nathan Eovaldi. Ryan Zimmerman got a one-out single into left-center field and advanced to third on a base hit by Bryce Harper to right field. Zimmerman would score on a ground out by Jayson Werth to third and Ian Desmond followed with single to center as he drove in Harper.
Miami(49-81) closed the margin to 2-1 during the sixth inning as Christian Yelich smacked his second career home run. He led off the frame and hit a 2-1 pitch from Ross Ohlendorf over the right-field wall.
Eovaldi fell to 2-5 this season as he surrendered two runs on eight hits in six innings while Ohlendorf held the Marlins to one run on three hits in five innings as he improved to 3-0.
