The Florida Panthers have signed center Scott Gomez to a one-year contract. He played 39 games for the San Jose Sharks last season and had two goals with 13 assists.
Gomez began his NHL career with the New Jersey Devils and won two Stanley Cup titles in his stint there. They defeated the Dallas Stars in six games during his rookie season in 1999-2000 and beat the Anaheim Mighty Ducks in seven games in 2002-03. He also played on the Eastern Conference champions in 2000-01 before they fell in seven games to the Colorado Avalanche in the Stanley Cup Finals.
He would later join the New York Rangers as a free agent in July 2007 and stayed there for two seasons. He was then traded to the Montreal Canadiens in June 2009 where he played for three seasons. Gomez currently leads all active U.S.-born NHL players with 530 assists and 701 points. He also won the Calder Trophy as the top rookie in the NHL back in 1999-2000.
