The Miami Central Rockets defeated the St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders 43-27 at Brian Piccolo Stadium in Fort Lauderdale on Friday night. It was the first time that both schools met in a game.
Miami Central(4-1) scored the only touchdown in the first quarter. Running back Kejon Owens busted through the middle from one yard out for a 6-0 lead with 2:21 left in the first.
In the second quarter, St. Thomas Aquinas(4-1) stepped ahead 7-6. Wide receiver Marcus Rosemy caught an eight-yard pass from quarterback Curt Casteel on the left side of the end zone at the 11:24 mark.
The Rockets regained the lead when quarterback Maurice Underwood raced into the left side of the line from four yards away with 6:42 left in the second. Running back Lexington Joseph put in a two-point conversion run to go up 14-7.
STA was able to tie the contest 14-14 on their first possession of the second half. Casteel found wide receiver Jamal Cooney on the left sideline for a 30-yard strike at 10:39 of the third.
The Raiders made it 21-14 at the 6:43 mark. Running back Daniel Carter sprinted up the middle, broke one tackle and scored on a 27-yard touchdown.
Momentum changed when Miami Central compiled 23 unanswered points during the second half. Jayden John converted on a 23-yard field goal with 2:41 to go in the third.
In the fourth quarter, Underwood threw a 62-yard long pass to wide receiver Anthony Colonel on the left sideline and he reached the end zone at the 10:26 mark. Underwood later had touchdown runs from five yards with 7:06 left and from three yards with 4:15 remaining and gave the Rockets a 37-21 gap.
St. Thomas Aquinas attempted to cut the 16-point deficit late in the game. Carter plowed in from six yards out with 2:23 to go, however Casteel was sacked on the two-point conversion to make it 37-27.
The Rockets burned the clock down in the final two minutes. Running back Shemar Paul carried the ball in from 11 yards away to give Miami Central a 43-27 lead.
