The Vancouver Canucks scored five goals in the opening period and pounded the Florida Panthers 7-2 at Rogers Arena on Monday night. The loss snapped the Panthers eight-game winning streak.
Vancouver(7-3-1) began the blitz at 1:14 as Brandon Sutter scored against Sam Montembeault. They added two more goals by Tim Schaller at the 4:25 mark and Jake Virtanen at 6:18 to make it 3-0.
Florida(5-3-4) stopped the bleeding just a couple of minutes later at 8:09. Brian Boyle put in his second goal with the club.
The Canucks expanded their lead later in the frame. J.T. Miller helped his new team on a tally with 10:25 left and Josh Leivo made it a four-goal margin with 54 seconds remaining in the first.
In the second period, the Panthers scored on the power-play with 7:02 to go. Keith Yandle fed a pass from the top of the zone and Mike Hoffman ripped a one-time slot from the top right circle past Thatcher Demko.
It became a four-goal gap again for Vancouver with 28.9 seconds left. Alexander Edler let go a wrist shot from the blue line and it was redirected in by Miller in the slot area for his second goal of the game.
The Canucks continued the momentum during their third period. Elias Pettersson centered the puck from the end wall and Brock Boeser lifted a wrist shot from the left of the crease with 6:40 to go.
