The Florida Panthers fell in their season opener to the Tampa Bay Lightning 5-2 at Amalie Arena on Thursday night. Both clubs will meet in Sunrise on Saturday night for the Panthers home opener.
There was just one goal during the first period and it was by Tampa Bay(1-0-0). Nikita Kucherov scored his first goal of the year at the 6:39 mark.
In the second period, Florida(0-1-0) evened it up at 2:39. Mike Hoffman powered in a shot on assists from Vincent Trocheck and Brett Connolly. It was the first point for Connolly with his new club.
The Bolts regained the lead 2-1 midway through the frame. Kevin Shattenkirk put in a tally for his new team.
The Panthers compiled a shorthanded goal at 8:49 of the third period. Trocheck scored on a breakaway off a feed from Aaron Ekblad.
The Lightning continued with the man advantage and converted on a power-play goal 45 seconds later to go ahead 3-2. Ondrej Palat got the goal with a primary assist by Alex Killorn.
Pat Maroon helped his new organization with a tally with 6:09 remaining for a two-goal margin. Erik Cernak placed an empty-net goal with 46 seconds left to put the game away.
