Cardinal Newman Closes Out Clewiston

The Cardinal Newman Crusaders held off the Clewiston Tigers 19-14 on Friday night at Sam Budnyk Field in West Palm Beach. It was a rare matchup between both high schools.
After a scoreless opening quarter, Cardinal Newman(5-2) took a 3-0 lead at the 10:32 mark of the second quarter. They were able to get a 29-yard field goal from Andrew MacMillan.
The Tigers answered back less than one minute later. Running back Johnny Crawford III sprinted down the right hash marks and scored from 78 yards away for a 7-3 advantage.
Former Glades Central and current Clewiston(4-1) starting quarterback Zo'Marion Harper would give them an 11-point margin late in the first half. He fired a 36-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Chauncy Cobb on the right side of the end zone.
The Crusaders pulled off a comeback during the second half. Running back Tovani Mizell raced around the left end and reached the end zone from four yards out at 9:03 of the third quarter. MacMillan added a 28-yard field goal with 2:38 remaining in the third and they trailed 14-13.
Cardinal Newman regained the lead in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Davi Belfort scooted through the left side of the line for a three-yard touchdown run to give them a 19-14 lead.
