The Florida Panthers topped the Buffalo Sabres 4-3 at BB&T Center on Saturday night. The club learned earlier in the day that they were eliminated from playoff contention when the Philadelphia Flyers won their game with a shutout over the New York Rangers. The Panthers conclude their regular season in Boston against the Bruins in a make-up game on Sunday.
Florida(43-30-8) took out their frustration during the first period as they scored three times in the first 14 minutes of the contest. Jonathan Huberdeau scored on the power play for his 27th goal of the season at 3:04. Assists were made by Vincent Trocheck and Aaron Ekblad on the play.
The Cats made it 2-0 on a tally by Colton Sceviour at the 10:59 mark. Nick Bjugstad increased the gap to a three-goal margin with his 19th goal of the campaign at 13:39 on assists from Evgenii Dadonov and Jared McCann.
After no goals in the second period and the first half of the third period, Buffalo(25-45-12) was able to close the deficit. Jason Pominville scored with 4:30 left and Sam Reinhart added a tally with 4:09 to go in the third and they trailed 3-2.
The Cats looked like they put the game out of reach with 1:23 remaining as Vincent Trocheck shot the puck into an empty net for his 31st goal. The Sabres ended the contest with a power-play goal by Ryan O'Reilly with 17 seconds left on the clock.
