Panthers Survive Hurricanes

     The Florida Panthers got by the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 on Monday night at BB&T Center. It was the first game of a four-game home stand for the Cats. The Panthers now trail the New Jersey Devils by five points for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot.
     Both clubs slugged it out during the first couple of minutes of the first period as they exchanged goals. Carolina(35-34-11) scored first at the 3:47 mark go ahead 1-0. The Canes peppered the Panthers cage with several close-range shots by Justin Williams and Brock McGinn which Roberto Luongo. Trevor van Riemsdyk charged in through the right circle for a rebound and scored on a snap shot.
     It took just 16 seconds for Florida(40-30-8) to tie the contest up. Denis Malgin advanced the puck into the Hurricanes zone as passed off to Jared McCann. He made a drop pass to MacKenzie Weegar in the right circle and he scored his second goal of the year on a wrist shot by Scott Darling.
     The Panthers would get their first lead 2-1 while on the power play with 9.1 seconds left in the period. Aleksander Barkov sent a lead pass to Vincent Trocheck in the right circle. His centering pass went to Evgenii Dadonov in the low slot and he scored his 27th goal of the season.
     The Hurricanes made it 2-2 with 6:12 remaining in the second period. Klas Dahlbeck connected a long pass from his own defensive zone to Lee Stempniak at the Panthers blue zone. He angled the puck ahead to Derek Ryan who was alone in the slot area and he put in a forehand shot.
     In the third period, the Cats regained the lead 3-2 with 7:58 to go. Barkov sent the puck from the low right circle back to Alexander Petrovic at the right point. His shot went through traffic and found the back of the Canes net for his second tally of the campaign.
