It is a Class 5A playoff rematch on Friday night as the Cardinal Gibbons Chiefs challenge the American Heritage Patriots at Heritage Field in Plantation. The Patriots won both meetings last season and it included a 58-57 triple overtime victory in a regional final.
Cardinal Gibbons(4-2, 2-0) have not upended their District 16 rival for the past decade. The question being asked is can the Chiefs finally defeat the Patriots. The Chiefs enter the game on a four-game winning streak following losses to Miami Central and Milton to open the regular season. They have outscored their opponents 148-42 in the last four games.
The Chiefs return just about all their offensive skill players from last year with quarterback Nik Scalzo leading the way. Both their running backs Vincent Davis and Tajae Davis can have an impact on any carry from the backfield. Scalzo will connect passes to a core of wide receivers that includes Dimon Stewart, Dijon Senior, Nikolas Ognenovic, Chris Benestad and Jordan Freeman.
After an opening game defeat to Carol City, American Heritage(5-1, 2-0) has put together five consecutive victories. The Patriots are the defending FHSAA Class 5A champions and have captured the state title in four of the past five years. They have outscored their last five opponents 141-47.
The Patriots offense has two running backs to depend and carry the ball with Tyler Jones and Lavelton Williams. Edwin Rhodes set in as quarterback and intends to find wide receivers Tyler March and Douglas Emilien along with tight end Beau Johnson down the field on passes.
