The Park Vista Cobras breezed by the John I. Leonard Lancers 37-8 on Monday night at GL Homes Stadium. The Class 7A, District 9 game was postponed several weeks ago. John I. Leonard is in the middle of a stretch of playing three games in seven days.
The Lancers punted at the end of their first possession and Aydin Henningham returned the ball 45 yards for a touchdown at 9:59 of the first quarter to give the Cobras a 7-0 lead.
In the second quarter, Daniel Castaneda kicked a 40-yard field goal at the 9:23 mark. The Cobras made it a 17-point margin when quarterback Tyler Thomas connected a 10-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Cole Polnasek with 1:53 left in the first half.
After a scoreless third quarter, John I. Leonard(1-6, 1-3) got on the scoreboard as quarterback Jadiel Cruz threw a seven-yard pass to wide receiver Jonel Dieujuste in the front of the end zone 46 seconds into the fourth. They added a two-point conversion as wide receiver Hansen Dominique made a leaping catch in the back of the end zone on a pass reception from Cruz and cut the gap to 17-8.
Park Vista(4-3, 3-1) responded when running back Nick King blasted through the middle, broke some tackles and scored from 19 yards away at 8:07.
Cobras defensive end Victor Miller intercepted a middle screen pass by Cruz. They scored on their first play of the drive as wide receiver Frantz Derival pulled in a 22-yard pass on the right side from quarterback Matt Paulo at the 7:49 mark.
The Park Vista lead was extended to 37-8 with 2:31 remaining when quarterback Chase Lawson sneaked in from one yard out.
