The Florida Panthers put up a surge of goals in the first period to get by the defending Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals 6-5 in a shootout at Capital One Arena on Friday night. The Panthers finally got in the win column after being winless during their first four games of the regular season.
Florida(1-2-2) jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 10:49 on a goal by Vincent Trocheck. The Caps evened it up as John Carlson got a goal at 15:26.
The Panthers retook the lead 32 seconds when Evgenii Dadonov scored on the power play. The Cats made it 3-1 as Colton Sceviour put in his first goal of the season at 16:36. Jared McCann added a tally with 1:08 left in the first for a three-goal margin.
The second period belong to Washington(3-2-2) as they mounted a comeback. Brett Connolly hit the twine at 1:28, Jacub Vrana scored at 8:36 and Devante Smith-Pelly tied the contest 4-4 at the 13:15 mark. Jonathan Huberbeau helped the Panthers as he connected on a power-play goal with 51 seconds remaining in the second.
In the third period, the Capitals waited until 1:25 to go and tied it 5-5. Nicklas Backstrom nailed a goal on the power play.
The contest went into a shootout and T.J. Oshie converted on their first attempt. Aleksander Barkov was able to match it for Florida in the first round. Evgeny Kuznetsov quickly put the Capitals ahead during the second round. Trocheck kept the Panthers alive on their third attempt. In the fourth round, Backstrom missed for the Caps and Huberdeau made it for the victory.
