For the first time since 2002, the Dwyer Panthers will open up the playoffs on the road as they challenge the Northeast Hurricanes in Oakland Park on Friday night in a Class 7A regional quarterfinal. This is a rematch from last year when the Panthers defeated the Hurricanes 45-14 in a regional semifinal in Palm Beach Gardens.
Dwyer(8-2) started their season with six consecutive wins which included an opening-game victory over Glades Central 30-9. It was the Panthers first win over the Raiders after six previous defeats in their heated Palm Beach County rivalry. Dwyer has lost two of their past four games which included a district home loss 28-12 to Atlantic and a non-district road defeat in Delray last week to American Heritage 13-7.
Panthers coach Jack Daniels will decide who will start at quarterback for his team between Clay Meister, Rob Nittolo and Daniel Parr. Alonso Smith will get the bulk of the handoffs along with Cortney Lowery. They have a strong wide receiver group with Clint Stephens, Johnnie Dixon and Ezra Saffold.
Northeast(9-1) currently has an eight-game winning streak after a 23-12 road loss at Hallandale during the second week of the season. They have beaten Miramar along with Boyd Anderson this season and defeated Fort Lauderdale 62-24 last week. The Canes are undefeated at home in 2012.
Former NFL player Donnell Bennett is the head coach of the team. The Hurricanes bring a powerful backfield with Jamal Wallace and Timonte King as running backs. Wide receiver Stacey Coley has blazing speed and will get open for receptions from quarterback Brion Sanchious.
