The Miami Heat played for the first time since Saturday in an unusual storyline as they got by the San Antonio Spurs 105-100 on Thursday night at American Airlines Arena. Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich had regular starters Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Danny Green return home to Texas following their game on Wednesday night in Orlando and rest for an upcoming game on Saturday against the Memphis Grizzlies.
Miami(11-3) began the game on a 16-6 spurt in the first six minutes. San Antonio(13-4) finished strong at the end of the first with a 13-2 run to lead 27-22 after one quarter. The Heat capped the second quarter on a 11-3 rally to get ahead 47-44 at halftime.
Neither team led by more than four points in the third quarter as the Spurs pulled ahead 76-73 at the end of the period. San Antonio had an 11-2 spurt midway in the fourth quarter to make it 92-85 with 4:48 left. Miami responded with a 15-6 run to retake the lead 100-98 on a Ray Allen three-point shot with 22 seconds to go. They ended the game on a 20-8 rally.
The Heat improved their home record to 7-0 which is the best start in franchise history. The Spurs came into this game with the best away record in the NBA and fell to 9-2 on the road. The Miami Heat honored former point guard Sherman Douglas during a halftime ceremony.
LeBron James came through with 23 points, nine rebounds and seven assists in 39 minutes and Dwyane Wade scored 19 points in 32 minutes. Chris Bosh added a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds while Allen poured in 20 points. Gary Neal led the Spurs with 20 points.
