It was a low-scoring game on their home field, but the South Plantation Paladins got by their local rivals the Plantation Colonels 10-0 at Sandra Darr Athletic Field on Friday night. Both schools played in the same district for a long time until realignment after the 2010 season. Paladins running back Alex Collins did not play due to an injury.
South Plantation(9-1, 4-1), who won their first eight games this season, attacked during their first possession. Quarterback John Franklin, a Florida State University commit, scored on a four-yard run at 9:54 in the first quarter for a Paladins 7-0 lead. Neither team was able to score for the rest of the first half.
Zac Leatherman kicked a 42-yard field goal with 7:27 remaining in the third quarter. Later in the quarter, defensive back Taj Thomas intercepted a pass from Chris Lammons and returned it to the Colonels 30-yard line. Leatherman would fall short on a 53-yard field goal with 1:44 to go.
Plantation(7-3, 4-1) faked a punt on the first play of the fourth quarter, but the run was stopped by the Paladins defense at the Colonels 25-yard line. Later in the Paladins next possession, Leatherman's 22-yard field goal was wide left.
The Colonels final two drives of the game were the closest they would come to break the shutout. The first one ended with a loss on downs at the South Plantation 23-yard line with 5:30 remaining. The last one ended as Lammons fumbled the ball with 2:18 left at the Paladins 37-yard line.
The District 11-8A champion Paladins, who won a three-way tiebreaker for the title on Monday, will host the Miramar Patriots in the first round of the FHSAA playoffs next week. The District 15-7A runner-up Colonels will have to visit American in Miami.
