St. Thomas Aquinas Defeats Deerfield Beach

The St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders had no problems as they rolled in a 45-0 shutout over the Deerfield Beach Bucks at Brian Piccolo Memorial Stadium in Fort Lauderdale on Friday night. The District 15-7A champion Raiders will host Miami Beach in the first round of the FHSAA playoffs next week. The Bucks, who came off a three-way tiebreaker on Monday as the District 11-8A runner-up,  will travel to Weston and face the Cypress Bay Lightning next week in the first round.
Deerfield Beach(5-4, 4-1) had a chance to score midway through the first quarter when they recovered a fumble on a punt return at the Raiders 36-yard line at 5:33. The Bucks lost the ball on downs in four plays. It would be their best scoring chance in the game.
St. Thomas Aquinas(8-2, 5-0) took over at their own 25-yard line. Quarterback John O'Korn finished the five-play, 75-yard drive with a 13-yard run through the right side of the line with 1:16 left in the quarter for a 7-0 lead.
On the first play of the second quarter, Raiders defensive back Chris Washington intercepted a pass at the Bucks 33-yard line and returned it 25 yards for great field position. Fullback Jonathan Boozer scored on the first play of the drive on an eight-yard run up the middle at 11:43.
The Raiders had a 66-yard touchdown run by Deltron Sands negated due to a holding penalty at 7:52 of the second. They punted the ball away later in the possession.
With less than a minute in the first half, Deerfield were unable to get off a punt because of a bad snap from center. The Raiders had the ball at the Bucks 12-yard line with 34 seconds to go. They got the ball to the two-yard line for the first down with 19 seconds left. Alex Knight kicked a 20-yard field goal with one second left on the clock for a Raiders 17-0 halftime lead. The game was out of reach as the Raiders added 28 second-half points for a 45-0 margin.
