Former Florida Marlins shortstop Walt Weiss has been hired as the new manager of the Colorado Rockies. Weiss played one season with the Marlins in 1993, their first season in Major League Baseball. He was the starting shortstop in their first game as a franchise back in April 1993 at Joe Robbie Stadium. He hit .266 with one home run and 39 runs batted in.
Weiss was the American League Rookie of the Year with the Oakland A's in 1988. He helped the team win three consecutive American League Championships from 1988 to 1990, which included their last World Series title in 1989 over the San Francisco Giants. He was traded by Oakland to the Marlins in November 1992.
The Colorado Rockies signed him as a free agent in November 1993. The team finished as the National League wild card and made the playoffs in just their third season. He played for the Atlanta Braves from 1998 until 2000 and won three National League Eastern Division titles. Weiss was part of the 1999 National League Champions and lost to the New York Yankees in the World Series. He made the playoffs eight times in 14 seasons.
