The New York Knicks played their home opener at Madison Square Garden on Friday night and stomped the Miami Heat 104-84. It was the first professional sporting event played in New York City since Hurricane Sandy passed through and did damage in the region earlier this week. Dwyane Wade donated his game check to help rebuilding efforts there.
The Heat never held the lead once in the entire game and only tied it 2-2 just two minutes in. The Knicks came out strong as they started with a 30-12 run and outscored Miami 33-17 in the first quarter. New York held a double-digit throughout the second quarter and were ahead 55-44 at halftime.
Miami were down by 20 points with five minutes remaining in the third quarter and behind 81-65 after the stanza. The gap was narrowed down to 13 points midway through the fourth quarter, but the Knicks had a comfortable lead as the Heat pulled their starters with four minutes to go. The Heat gave up more three-pointers in a game during their franchise's 25-year history.
LeBron James had 23 points, seven rebounds and five assists in 37 minutes while Wade added 15 points in 35 minutes. Chris Bosh contributed 12 points and 11 rebounds in 27 minutes and newcomer Rashard Lewis came off the bench and popped in 16 points.
Jason Kidd made his Knicks debut after coming over from the Dallas Mavericks and scored 12 points in 23 minutes. Carmelo Anthony led New York with a game-high 30 points and ten rebounds in 39 minutes. Raymond Fenton also debuted for the Knickerbockers, his second stint on the team, with 14 points and nine assists in 33 minutes.
