The Plantation Colonels pulled a mild surprise on the road as they defeated the American Patriots 29-8 on Thursday night at Traz Powell Stadium in a Class 7A regional quarterfinal. Next week the Colonels will visit the winner of the game between St. Thomas Aquinas and Miami Beach in a regional semifinal.
Plantation(8-3) entered the contest having lost two of their last three games against the St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders 24-20 and last week to the South Plantation Paladins 10-0 while American(7-4) lost last week 26-7 to the Carol City Chiefs.
Neither team scored in the first quarter, but the Colonels placed 16 points in the second quarter. Running back Jovante Ham scored on a four-yard run seven minutes into the stanza and they made the two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead. Wide receiver Jewison Dawkins caught a 35-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Chris Lammons with 20 seconds left in the first half. The Colonels followed with another two-point conversion for a 16-0 halftime lead.
Plantation extended their lead to 23-0 at 7:30 of the third quarter as Antwuan Haynes raced in from 11 yards out. The Patriots and the Colonels scored one touchdown each for the rest of the game.
