Flames Burn Panthers

     Sam Bennett was back in Calgary as the Florida Panthers lost to the Calgary Flames 5-1 at Scotiabank Saddledome on Tuesday night. Bennett returned to Calgary for the first time since he was dealt to Florida on April 12, 2021. It was the first game of a five-game road trip for the Panthers.
     Calgary(18-11-6) jumped to a 1-0 lead on a power-play tally at the 4:36 mark of the first period. Matthew Tkachuk pushed the puck back from the right circle to the right point. Johnny Gaudreau took a slap shot which was saved. Rasmus Andersson ripped a shot from the inner left circle that was stopped by Spencer Knight. He got to the rebound and scored his first goal of the year on a forehand shot from the slot area. 
     The Flames extended it to 2-0 with 8:24 left in the first. Mikael Backlund tapped the puck to Andrew Mangiapane in the low left circle. He placed it across the crease and Blake Coleman put in a wrist shot from the right goal line for his seventh goal with his new team. 
     Florida((26-8-5) cut the deficit to 2-1 with 7:24 remaining in the second period. Carter Verhaeghe fired a shot from the top left circle which hit the left point. Mason Marchment backhanded the puck from right of the crease off the right point. Bennett tapped it in from the blue paint to burn his former team with his 16th goal this season. 
     It became to a two-goal margin again for Calgary with 3:56 to go in the frame. Sean Monahan won a left-circle faceoff and drew it back to the left point. Gaudreau rifled a slap shot that was deflected in by Sean Monahan for a power-play goal. 
     In the third period, the Flames scored on their first shot on goal at 3:47. Gaudreau skated down the right wing and angled a pass to the top left circle. Elias Linholm sent a lead pass and Tkachuk redirected it in from the low slot for his 17th goal this season. 
     They extended it to 5-1 at the 6:43 mark. Tkachuk shuffled the puck from the top right circle to Gaudreau in the top left circle. He connected a cross-ice pass and Monahan waited to put a forehand shot into the cage from the top of the crease for his second goal of the contest and sixth tally of the season.
