The New York Yankees topped the Miami Marlins 8-2 at Yankee Stadium on Friday. It was the Yankees home opener in 2026 and the Marlins first contest on the road this season.
The Yankees matched their 6-1 start from two years ago when they captured the American League pennant. They once began a season 7-0 back in 1933.
Miami(5-2) moved out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Xavier Edwards powered a solo homer to right field on the first pitch.
New York(6-1) leaped into the lead 2-1 during the bottom of the first. Aaron Judge blasted a two-run homer to left field on a 1-1 count with Trent Grisham aboard. It was the third home run for Judge this season.
The Yankees extended their lead to 4-2 in the second inning. Grisham walked with the bases loaded and Jazz Chisholm Jr. crossed the plate. Judge came up next and was hit by a pitch for Jose Caballero to score.
The Marlins closed it to 4-2 in the top of the fifth. Owen Caissie hammered a solo home run to right-center field on a 2-1 count for his second homer in a Marlins uniform.
It became 5-2 for the Bronx Bombers in the bottom of the sixth. Austin Wells was able score on a wild pitch.
The Yanks increased it to 6-2 in the seventh inning. Ben Rice homered over the right-field fence on a 2-1 pitch.
New York added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth for an 8-2 advantage. Rice doubled into center field for Judge and Cody Bellinger to score.
