The Panthers were eliminated from postseason contention yesterday. They had their two-time Stanley Cup championship reign ended along with their team-record streak of six straight consecutive postseason appearances.
In the first period, Pittsburgh(40-22-16) scooted out to a 1-0 lead at the 11:00 mark of the first period. A Daniil Tarasov clearing pass was intercepted by Elmer Soderblom. He put in a wrist shot from the low left circle into an open net for his sixth goal in 2025-26.
Florida (37-37-3) tied it up 1-1 with 3:45 to go in the opening frame. Cole Schwindt scored his fourth goal of the year on a wrist shot from the top left circle. Vinnie Hinostroza and Gustav Forsling were credited with assists on the sequence.
The Pens regained the lead 2-1 with 3:10 remaining in the first. Sidney Crosby snapped shot from the left-circle dot for his 29th goal of the season. It was Crosby's 654th career goal in the NHL. He also will finish with his 21st straight NHL campaign with one point-per-game in a season.
It became 3-1 for the Penguins on the power play with 48 seconds left in the period. Rickard Rakell scored his 23rd goal of the campaign on a snap shot from the high slot.
Pittsburgh extended their lead to 4-1 with 1:52 remaining in the second period. Rakell collected his second tally of the game and 24th goal this season on a forehand shot from the low slot.
The Penguins made it 5-1 at 3:48 of the third period. Bryan Rust was able to score on a backhand shot from the top of the crease for his 28th goal of the season.
The Panthers scored with the man advantage with 5:45 left in the third period. Seth Jones fed a pass and Carter Verhaeghe chalked up his 24th goal in 2025-26 on a wrist shot.
