The Florida Panthers began a season-high six-game homestand in Sunrise on Thursday night and lost to the Boston Bruins 3-2 at BB&T Center. The Cats have lost six of their last seven games and are now 1-2-0 at home this season.
Boston(4-2-0) scored with their third shot on former teammate and Panthers goalie Tim Thomas at 3:45 of the first period. Daniel Seidenberg gave a lead pass in the neutral zone to Daniel Paille. He put on the jets at the Panthers blue line, went around Erik Gudbranson and flipped a shot from the inner left circle over the head of Thomas.
The Bruins added a goal on their first power play at 12:47 to make it 2-0. Dougie Hamilton took a slap shot from the top of the zone that went through traffic and into the net. David Krejci and Zdeno Chara got the assists on the play.
Florida(2-6-0) closed the margin to 2-1 with 7:28 left in the second period. Tom Gilbert passed the puck from the right point to Jonathan Huberdeau on the right-wing wall. He placed a pass to a streaking Kris Versteeg in the right circle and he fired a snap shot by Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask for the goal.
The Panthers were able to tie the game with six minutes remaining in the third period when Jesse Winchester scored from his knees on a second-chance rebound at the edge of the crease. Nick Bjudstad put the loose puck in that area from the left face-off circle draw. It was Winchester's first goal as a Florida Panther.
With 58.7 seconds to go in regulation, Reilly Smith of the B's shoveled a backhand shot from the low left circle by Thomas for the game-winning goal. Patrice Bergeron was able to corral the puck to him from the slot area.
Not many power plays in this game as the Bruins went 1-for-3 while the Cats were 0-for-1. Rask took the win as he improved to 4-2-0 and Thomas fell to 1-3-0 this year as he stopped 37 shots.
