Lightning Stop Panthers

    The Florida Panthers lost their third straight game as they fell to the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-3 in a shootout on Sunday at BB&T Center. The Cats, who have been on the winning side two of their last 11 games, are now 1-2-2 on the current six-game homestand. They finish the string of home games against the St. Louis Blues on Friday night.
    Tampa Bay(8-3-0) jumped out quickly to a 2-0 lead five minutes into the game. Martin St. Louis picked up his seventh goal this season at 41 seconds followed by a goal by Steven Stamkos at 4:35, his eighth goal this year.
    Shawn Matthias broke up of his scoring slump for Florida(3-7-2) with his first goal of the season with 6:12 remaining in the first to cut the lead down to 2-1.
    Radko Gudas extended the Tampa Bay lead to 3-1 with a power-play goal midway through the second period at 9:58.
    The Panthers came back in this game during the third period with two goals to tie it at 3-3. Nick Bjugstad scored his first tally this season at 5:39 and Brad Boyes put in his fifth goal for the Cats at 8:51.
    In the shootout, Valtteri Filppula lit the lamp on the Bolts first attempt while Boyes matched it on the Panthers third attempt. Stamkos scored on the fourth attempt for Tampa Bay and Dmitry Kulikov missed for the Panthers.
