After losing their first three games this season and firing head coach Peter Laviolette, the Philadelphia Flyers held on to defeat the Florida Panthers 2-1 at Wells Fargo Center on Tuesday night. The Panthers will finish a four-game road trip in Tampa Bay on Thursday night before they play their home opener against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday.
Philadelphia(1-3-0) jumped out to a 2-0 lead during the first period. Brayden Schenn put in a goal off a rebound from the end wall on a wrist shot from the slot area at 4:49 and Braydon Coburn added a tally on a wrist shot from the right wing at 7:31. Panthers goalie Tim Thomas then had to leave the game because of a lower-body injury after he dove for the shot and had to replaced by Jacob Markstrom. It was the second straight game Markstrom had to relieve Thomas in net.
Florida(1-2-0) climbed back into the game with 6.7 seconds left in the second period as Brad Boyes scored his first goal as a Panther to make it 2-1. Aleksander Barkov sent a pass from the left circle to defenseman Brian Campbell in the high slot, he fired a shot that deflected off a Flyers defenseman and Boyes ripped a wrist shot from the low left circle for the goal. The Cats got the puck by Flyers goalie Steve Mason on their 25th shot as Barkov picked up his first NHL assist.
The Panthers had their best chance to tie the game on a double-minor power play early in the third period as they blasted five shots on Mason.
