The fourth round of large school classifications from Class 8A to Class 5A happened on Friday night. Four FHSAA state semifinal games were played that involved South Florida high schools.
Atlantic topped Miami 28-21 in Class 8A and will play Dr. Phillips for the state championship next Saturday night. The Eagles reached the FHSAA football final game for the first time since 1978.
St. Thomas Aquinas fell to Venice 27-20 and had their three-year title reign as Class 7A state champions end. It was the first time that the Raiders lost a game in Central Florida and also a state semifinal game since 2009 at Bradenton against Manatee.
Defending Class 5A state champion American Heritage came back to defeat Immokalee 28-21 in Plantation and will face Baker County for the Class 5A state title next Friday afternoon. They will attempt to capture their fourth state title in the last five seasons.
Miami Northwestern blasted Naples 42-7 in a state semifinal and will challenge Armwood in the Class 6A state championship contest next Friday night. The Bulls return to the state championship game for the first time since 2008 and look to win their first title since 2007.
The final count has been determined in which six South Florida high schools will be a part of state championship games at Camping World Stadium in Orlando next week. Palm Beach County has two teams with Atlantic in Class 8A and Oxbridge Academy in Class 3A.
There are two high schools representing Broward County. Chaminade-Madonna will battle it out for the Class 3A state title against Oxbridge Academy next Saturday morning. American Heritage is the other school.
Dade County has two schools heading for Orlando. Along with Miami Northwestern in Class 6A, Champagnat Catholic takes on University Christian for the Class 2A state crown next Friday morning.
