The Miami Marlins have traded right fielder Giancarlo Stanton to the New York Yankees for second baseman Starlin Castro and two other players. Stanton became the first player in Marlins history to capture the National League Most Valuable Player award in 2017.
The Yankees have acquired a player who was the reigning Most Valuable Player before. They picked up Alex Rodriguez from the Texas Rangers after the 2003 season.
Stanton hit 59 home runs in 2017 for Miami which is the most homers by anyone in Major League Baseball since Barry Bonds had 73 home runs back in 2001. He also led the National League with 132 runs batted in and a .631 slugging percentage in 2017.
He was drafted by the Florida Marlins at the 2007 MLB Draft and made his major league debut in June 2010. His best season prior to 2017 was in 2014 when he led the National League with 37 home runs and a .555 slugging percentage along with 105 RBI. Stanton finished second in voting for the N.L. Most Valuable Player award.
