The Florida Panthers made their first visit ever to Little Caesars Arena in Detroit and topped the Red Wings 2-1 in overtime on Monday night. It was the first game of a five-game road trip for the Panthers.
Detroit(11-13-6) got a fortunate bounce to go up 1-0 with 1:33 left in the first period. Henrik Zetterberg ended a 22-game goal-scoring drought as he scored on an assist by Trevor Daley.
Florida(12-4-4) would have to wait until the third period to tie the game 1-1 on the power play at 10:09. Aleksander Barkov sent the puck from the left circle to Jonathan Huberdeau to the crease area. He made a backhand pass from his belly across the blue paint where Vincent Trocheck scored his team-high 13rd goal of the season. Trocheck extended his point streak to five games with the tally.
The Panthers were able to win in overtime with 2:58 remaining on the first goal of the season by Michael Matheson. He carried the puck into the Red Wings zone through the right circle and took a shot from close range. After Jimmy Howard make a save on that and a Nick Bjugstad shot, Matheson slapped in the puck from the top of the crease.
