Miami Sports Radio 560 WQAM-AM was the top sports format radio station in the Miami/Fort Lauderdale market for the fifth straight month. Their margin of victory among the other two competitors increased during the month.
It was the first period that WQAM and Sports Talk 790 The Ticket WAXY-AM became sister stations owned by Entercom Communications. That company merged with CBS Radio on November 17. Both stations captured 88% of the market share among sports format stations in December after they had a 92% share in the previous month with different owners.
WQAM rose from a 1.4 to a 1.5 in the period. They tied 610 WIOD-AM in first place for the highest share of any AM radio station in the Miami/Fort Lauderdale region. No AM sports station has ever accomplished that feat. The momentum of the University of Miami Hurricanes football season in the ACC has created more listeners.
The Ticket dropped from a 1.0 to a 0.9 in the period. The Miami Heat continue to struggle in the middle of the pack in the Eastern Conference.
Miami Sports 940 WINZ-AM pulled off a surprise as they went up from a 0.2 to a 0.3 this month. They were at a 0.2 for five consecutive months and went up during the offseason of the Miami Marlins. It has helped that they have the exclusive rights to NFL games from Westwood One in the region.
