South Florida Sports Review 2017

2017 was a year where all four South Florida major professional sports franchises fell short of their goals. None of teams were able to reach the postseason for the second time in three years. The previous time that no pro teams showed up in the playoffs was in 2002.
The Miami Dolphins finished in third place of the AFC East Division with a 6-10 record which was seven games back from the New England Patriots. The Miami Marlins ended in second place of the National League Eastern Division at 77-85 and 20 games behind the Washington Nationals.
The Miami Heat finished ninth in the Eastern Conference at 41-41 and lost the tiebreaker with the Chicago Bulls for the final playoff spot. The Heat landed in third place for the Southeast Division. The Florida Panthers were fifth in the Atlantic Division with a 35-36-11 record and ended 14 points behind the Toronto Maple Leafs for the final playoff spot.
Miami FC competed in their second season of the North American Soccer League. They finished first in the NASL Spring Season and Fall Season. Miami FC had the most combined points and was placed as the first seed of the NASL Playoffs. They lost at home in the semifinal round to the New York Cosmos on penalty kicks 7-6.
