Giancarlo Stanton Sets National League Record

Giancarlo Stanton set a National League record for most home runs in the month of August as the Miami Marlins fell to the Washington Nationals 8-3 on Tuesday night at Nationals Park. The game began thirty minutes late due to a weather delay. Park Vista High School grad Trea Turner made his return to the Nationals lineup after he missed 51 games due to a right wrist injury.
Miami(66-65) moved out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Giancarlo Stanton blasted a solo homer to left field on a 1-1 pitch for his major league leading 51st home run of the season. It was his 30th home run in the last 38 games and 18th home run in the last 25 games. Stanton passed Willie Mays and Sammy Sosa with his 18th homer in the month of August. He tied the Major League Baseball mark with Rudy York of the Detroit Tigers, who hit 18 home runs in August 1937.
In the third inning, the Nationals picked up two runs to take the lead. Daniel Murphy drove in Wilmer Difo and Edwin Jackson with a single into center field. The Nats added a run in the fourth inning on an Anthony Rendon base hit to center which scored Adam Lind.
The Marlins closed the gap in the top of the fifth inning. Stanton hit a sacrifice fly to center field and Dee Gordon crossed the plate.
Washington(80-51) extended their margin to 5-2 in the bottom of the fifth. Turner scored on a throwing error by Derek Dietrich. Ryan Zimmerman later singled into left-center field for former Marlin Alejandro De Aza to score.
The Fish scored their final run of the game in the seventh. Miguel Rojas scored on a throwing error by Jackson during a sacrifice bunt.
The Nats wrapped it up with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Rendon connected with a double into right-center field as Murphy, Zimmerman and Lind scored on the play.
