The Palm Beach Gardens Gators beat the Piper Bengals 19-7 in the final two-quarter game of the three-way kickoff classic at The Corral in Delray Beach. Both schools, who made the FHSAA playoffs last season, are considered Class 8A playoff contenders in Section 3 with the new playoff points system being used for the first time in Florida this year.
Palm Beach Gardens wide receiver Deonte Cooley made a 52-yard catch and took it to the Bengals two-yard line. Several plays later, Cooley recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead at 6:45.
The Gators made it a 13-point margin when running back Pedro Epps raced up the middle for a 13-yard touchdown run with three minutes left in the first.
Gardens got the ball back in the middle of the second quarter on a turnover when defensive back Gurvan Hall stripped the ball from a Bengals wide receiver. Quarterback David Studstill later fired a 45-yard touchdown pass up the middle of the field to wide receiver Jake Hockenson and he easily walked it into the end zone at the 4:25 mark.
Piper broke the shutout on the final play of the game. They scored on a two-yard touchdown run up the middle by running back Jamarquis Thomas.
