The Deerfield Beach Bucks head down to Miami and challenge the Carol City Chiefs at Traz Powell Stadium on Saturday. It will be one of two broadcasts on national television from that venue.
Deerfield Beach reached all the way to the FHSAA Class 8A state semifinal contest last year and fell to Columbus. They played two road preseason games prior to the regular season. They blanked Class 5A state champion Cardinal Gibbons 14-0 in a two-quarter game and were edged by Atlantic 12-10 in a kickoff classic last week.
Derohn King is expected start at quarterback for the Bucks while Michael Pratt is still out with an injury. Running back Jaylan Knighton will get the majority of carries from the backfield for the team. Wide receiver Deajaun McDougle, Bryce Gowdy and Xavier Restrepo are the main targets for King to connect passes to.
It is a new situation for Carol City. They are no longer in the same district with rivals Miami Northwestern, Miami Central and Miami Norland. They moved classifications from Class 6A to Class 5A. The Chiefs won the 2016 Class 6A state title and still have several seniors on the roster from that squad.
