The Florida Panthers announced on Monday that the organization will retire the number 1 jersey of Roberto Luongo. It is the first jersey number to be retired by the team of a former player. His number will be retired on March 7 against the Montreal Canadiens.
Luongo had two stints with the Florida Panthers totaling 572 games. His first reign with them was from 2000-01 to 2005-06 and his second from the middle of 2013-14 to 2018-19. Luongo officially made his retirement on June 26, 2019 and had set the Panthers all-time franchise marks for a goalie with 230 wins, 38 shutouts and 16.068 saves. He also holds the single-season records in wins, games, saves and shutouts.
He is near the top among goalies in NHL all-time records. It includes third with 389 wins, second with 28,409 saves, ninth with 77 shutouts and second in games played with 1,044.
Luongo led the Panthers to the Atlantic Division title in 2015-16. Luongo also won two Olympic gold medals for Canada in 2010 and 2014.
