The decision came as a major surprise to people in attendance at The Breakers in Palm Beach on December 10, 1992. The NHL awarded a franchise to H. Wayne Huizenga and the South Florida region. They also gave a team to Anaheim that was headed by Walt Disney Company leader Michael Eisner.
