Venice And Lakeland Title Preview

The Venice Indians battle the Lakeland Dreadnaughts for the FHSAA Class 4S state championship on Saturday afternoon at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale. Both Central Florida high schools have met just four times in this century and split the contests with two wins each.
Venice(9-3) captured the FHSAA Class 8A state title against the Apopka Blue Darters last year at the same venue. They will try to capture their fourth football championship in school history. The Indians have outscored their opponents 420-127 this season. They clobbered Riverdale 87-20 in the regional quarterfinal, blanked Lehigh 39-0 in the regional semifinal, handled Riverview Sarasota 35-15 in the regional final and got by Buchholz 42-35 in the state semifinal.
Indians quarterback Brooks Bentley looks to guide their team on offense. Running backs Jamarice Wilder and Alvin Johnson will get their share of rushing attempts. Wide receivers Keyon Sears, Ryan Matulevich and tight end Fin Jones can make pass receptions from Bentley.
Lakeland(13-0) looks to collect their eighth state title in school history. The Dreadnaughts last took the state crown when they defeated the St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders for the FHSAA Class 7A state title back in 2018. They have outscored their opponents 518-97 and compiled four shutouts this year. The Dreadnaughts pounded Lake Gibson 49-0 in a regional quarterfinal, walloped Mitchell 47-10 in a regional semifinal, knocked off Lake Minneola 41-6 in a regional final and edged Osceola 14-7 in a state semifinal.
Their offense will be led by quarterback Zachary Pleuss. Running backs D'Marius Rooker, Don'Ares Johnson and Markell Johnson look to advance the ball from the backfield. Pleuss will toss the ball evenly to wide receivers Tyler Williams, Jhoelle Velazquez, Daidren Zipper and tight end Omari Mixon.
