Panthers Race By Red Wings

The Florida Panthers defeated the Detroit Red Wings 5-1 at FLA Live Arena on Thursday night. It was the Panthers first home game since their five-game road trip. Florida left wing Carter Verhaeghe participated in his 200th National Hockey League game.
The Red Wings, who are an Atlantic Division opponent, made their only appearance in Sunrise this season. The Cats play four of their next five contests at home.
Florida(13-10-4) took a 1-0 lead with 1:55 left in the first period. Former Red Wings player Marc Staal sent a lead pass from the neutral zone. Chris Tierney skated through the slot area on a breakaway and placed a backhand shot from the low slot by Alex Nedeljkovic for his first goal in a Panthers jersey.
In the second period, the Panthers expanded their lead to 2-0 at the 1:47 mark. Sam Reinhart made a pass from the right wing. Aleksander Barkov snapped a shot from the high slot that was redirected by Eetu Luostarinen in the low slot for his seventh goal of the campaign.
It became 3-0 for the Cats just 58 seconds later. Matthew Tkachuk pushed the puck ahead and Sam Bennett touched it in the crease area. Josh Mahura raced in and scored on a forehand shot from the low slot for his third tally of the year.
Detroit(13-8-5) scored with the man advantage at 8:09 of the second. Lucas Raymond took a shot from the left circle that was deflected by Andrew Kopp on the left of the crease. Jonatan Berggren got to the rebound and scored his fourth goal this year from the right of the crease past Sergei Bobrovsky.
The Panthers extended it to 4-1 with 5:08 remaining in the period. Nick Cousins fired a high snap shot from the left point. Matt Kiersted pounced on the rebound and steered the puck into the cage for his first goal this season and second NHL goal.
Florida increased their lead to 5-1 with 4:23 to go in the second. Tkachuk carried the puck down the right side through the right circle. He released a wrist shot from the low right circle for his 13rd goal of the season.
