Panthers Roll Over Canucks

The Florida Panthers raced by the Vancouver Canucks 5-1 at Rogers Arena on Thursday night. There was a pregame ceremony honoring new Hockey Hall of Fame inductees former Canucks/Panthers goalie Roberto Luongo along with Canucks forwards Daniel Sedin and Henrik Sedin. Panthers right wing Patric Hornqvist participated in his 900th NHL game.
Florida(11-9-4) had three-goal barrage in the final two minutes of the first period. Josh Mahura angled a pass from the right wing and Matthew Tkachuk backhanded a shot from the low slot by Thatcher Demko for his 11th goal of the season with 1:46 to go.
The Panthers made it 2-0 with 1:11 remaining in the period. Eetu Luostarinen poked the puck from the top of the crease and Sam Reinhart passed back from the low left circle. Gustav Forsling faked and then snapped a shot from the top left circle for his third tally of the year.
It became 3-0 for the Cats with 46.2 seconds left in the first. Eric Staal and Hornqvist took shots from close range that were saved. Ryan Lomberg slid the puck from the blue paint for his third goal of the campaign. Staal collected his first point wearing a Panthers jersey on the play.
In the second period, Florida expanded it to 4-0 at the 11:38 mark. Tkachuk sent a cross-ice pass from below the left circle. Carter Verhaeghe made a square pass from the inner right circle and Sam Bennett scored on a one-time shot from the low slot for his sixth goal this season. Bennett was held without a goal in his last eight games.
Vancouver(9-12-3) closed it to 4-1 with 7:34 to go in the second. Ethan Bear lifted the puck out of his zone. Dakota Joshua skated with it down the left side through the neutral zone and past the Panther blue line. Joshua placed a forehand shot from the low left circle by Spencer Knight for his fourth goal of the year.
The Panthers made it a four-goal margin again with 8:49 left in the third period. Tkachuk picked up a giveaway in the Canucks zone at the right circle. He pushed the puck ahead and Bennett released a wrist shot from the left of the crease for his second goal of the contest.
