Pittsburgh had a backlog of first basemen on the major league roster. They acquired Ji-Man Choi from the Tampa Bay Rays in November and signed free agent Carlos Santana earlier this week.
Diaz participated in 112 contests in the last three seasons with the Marlins. He had a .169 batting average with five home runs and 11 runs batted in for Miami in 58 games last season.
